Botox vs. Dysport vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

Botox relaxes. Fillers restore. Here’s how to choose.

The Mistake Most People Make When Researching Injectables

When patients come to Modern Wellness Clinic in Summerlin asking about injectables, the most common misconception is that Botox, Dysport, and fillers are basically the same thing with different names. They’re not. They work through completely different mechanisms, address completely different problems, and produce results that are fundamentally distinct from one another. Using the wrong treatment for the wrong concern is exactly how people end up with results they didn’t want.

Here’s how each one actually works — and how to know which one (or which combination) addresses what you’re actually trying to fix.

Botox and Dysport: Relaxing Muscles to Smooth Lines

Botox® and Dysport® are both botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators. They temporarily block the nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract, preventing the repetitive movements that create dynamic wrinkles — the lines caused by squinting, frowning, raising your brows, and smiling. They don’t add anything. They don’t remove anything. They simply stop the muscle from contracting so the overlying skin can smooth out.

The difference between Botox and Dysport is mostly in formulation. Dysport tends to have a slightly faster onset and diffuses a bit more widely, which makes it well-suited for larger treatment areas like the forehead. Botox is typically preferred for more precise, targeted applications like crow’s feet and the glabellar lines between the brows. Your injector will advise which product is more appropriate based on your anatomy and what you’re treating.

Results from both typically appear within 3–7 days and last 3–4 months. Neither is permanent. Both require repeat treatment to maintain results — though many patients find that repeated treatments allow for lower doses over time as the muscles gradually weaken with disuse.

What Botox and Dysport Are Used For at Modern Wellness Clinic

The most common treatment areas: forehead lines, glabellar lines (the 11s between the brows), crow’s feet, brow lift, lip flip, chin dimpling, neck bands, and bunny lines. We also use Botox therapeutically for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), masseter reduction (jaw slimming and teeth grinding relief), and chronic migraine.

Dermal Fillers: Restoring Volume That’s Been Lost

Fillers do something fundamentally different from neuromodulators. As we age, we lose fat pads, collagen, and even bone density in the face — which creates hollowing under the eyes, flattening of the cheeks, deepening of the nasolabial folds, and loss of lip definition and jawline structure. Fillers restore this lost volume by physically filling the areas that have deflated.

At Modern Wellness Clinic, we use hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvéderm®, Restylane®) for lips, cheeks, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, and jawline contouring. Radiesse®, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler, is used for deeper structural work and areas where collagen stimulation is part of the goal. Results are immediate (with final appearance after swelling resolves) and last 6–18 months depending on the product and area.

Do You Need Botox, Fillers, or Both?

Most patients over 35 benefit from both. Neuromodulators address the lines created by muscle movement. Fillers address the volume loss that makes the face look hollowed, deflated, or structurally changed with age. A good injector evaluates both — and recommends the combination that addresses your specific concerns without over-treating.

At Modern Wellness Clinic in Summerlin, our injectors take a conservative approach by default. It’s always easier to add than to correct. First-time patients receive a conservative treatment to establish a baseline response, with the option to adjust at follow-up.
